West Virginia Angler Reclaims Chain Pickerel Length Record

A West Virginia angler has once again achieved a remarkable feat, breaking his own state record for the longest chain pickerel. Matt Born of Reedsville, with a length of 27.95 inches, now holds the esteemed title, demonstrating his consistent success in catching these impressive fish. This recent catch on April 21st, weighing 5.65 pounds, was made in a private pond in Preston County, using a homemade spinner and a light 4-pound-test line. This accomplishment notably exceeds his previous record, established in 2019.
Expert fisheries biologists, Dustin Smith and E.M. Dean, officially verified Born's catch, confirming its status as the longest chain pickerel ever documented in the state. While Born currently possesses both the present and former length records, the state's all-time weight record for the species remains with Steven Demma, who caught a 6.19-pound pickerel in 2001 at Tuckahoe Lake. Born's continuous pursuit of pickerel records, with his current fish surpassing his earlier 27.87-inch catch from Upper Deckers Lake, showcases a friendly rivalry among West Virginia's dedicated anglers.
The chain pickerel, scientifically known as Esox niger, is a member of the pike family, renowned for its predatory nature and widespread distribution across eastern North America. These fish are perfectly adapted for ambush, featuring elongated bodies, sharp teeth, and a protective slime coating, making them efficient hunters in dense, shallow aquatic environments. Their distinctive chain-like markings and a dark vertical line under the eye aid in their identification. Despite often being mistaken for their larger relatives, northern pike and muskellunge, pickerel are typically smaller, averaging between 16 and 22 inches, with anything over 26 inches considered a significant trophy. Anglers seeking pickerel can find success with standard bass tackle and fast-moving lures like jerkbaits and inline spinners, which effectively imitate baitfish. Given their sharp teeth, the use of abrasion-resistant leaders, such as fluorocarbon or knottable wire, is highly recommended to prevent line breakage and lure loss.
Born's achievement serves as an inspiring example of dedication and skill in the world of angling. His repeated record-breaking catches not only highlight his personal prowess but also underscore the vibrant fishing opportunities available in West Virginia. The chain pickerel, often underestimated, proves to be a tenacious and rewarding species for anglers, offering exhilarating experiences and fostering a deep appreciation for aquatic ecosystems and the pursuit of excellence in sport fishing.
