Thrilling Victories at The Traka 200 Gravel Race

The Traka 200 gravel race in Girona, Spain, witnessed remarkable performances, with Lukas Pöstlberger and Sofía Gómez Villafañe emerging as victors. Pöstlberger, an Austrian Gravel Champion and former WorldTour professional, clinched the men's title after a tense finish, holding off a determined group of chasers. Meanwhile, Gómez Villafañe showcased her dominance in the women's category, successfully defending her title with an impressive solo effort. The challenging 202km course, known for its dusty hills and significant elevation gain, proved a true test of skill and endurance for the elite field of international riders.
The men's competition unfolded as a captivating battle between road racing specialists and mountain biking talents. Lukas Pöstlberger, representing Rose Racing Circle, launched an aggressive attack early in the race, establishing a strong presence at the front. With over 130km remaining, the former Giro d'Italia pink jersey wearer formed a leading trio. Despite a puncture affecting one of his companions and a formidable chase group closing in, Pöstlberger maintained his lead. In the final kilometers, his resilience was evident as he extended his advantage, ultimately crossing the finish line 20 seconds ahead of American gravel champion Bradyn Lange, securing a memorable win in just over six hours.
Pöstlberger expressed his satisfaction with the victory, highlighting the significance of winning Europe's largest gravel race. He attributed his success to thorough preparation, dedication, and a perfectly executed strategy on race day. The podium saw Lange in second and Martin Stošek (CZE) in third, with Wout Alleman (Bel) and Matthieu Bak Klaris (Den) closely following. Notably, mountain bike legend Nino Schurter also delivered a strong performance, finishing sixth, underscoring the diverse talent drawn to the event.
In the women's race, Sofía Gómez Villafañe, riding for Specialized Off-Road, solidified her reputation as a leading figure in gravel cycling. Fresh off a recent victory at Sea Otter Gravel, Villafañe took control from the outset of The Traka 200. She dictated the pace on the initial climbs, creating a gap with Larissa Hartog (Canyon x DT Swiss All-Terrain Racing). Despite a strong chasing pack forming behind them, Villafañe and Hartog collaborated effectively, extending their lead. Villafañe’s decisive move came with 10km to go, attacking on a steep climb to go solo and secure her second consecutive Traka 200 title in under seven hours. Hartog finished second, with teammate Nele Laing taking third, showcasing their team's strength.
The women's race also featured a remarkable comeback story, with Karolina Migoń, a two-time Traka 360 champion, lining up for the 200km event just hours after a crash and mechanical forced her out of the longer race. Her determination saw her challenging for a podium spot within the chase group. The Traka 200, a key event in the Gravel Earth Series, continues to attract top international talent, offering a demanding test of skill, endurance, and strategic racing across its challenging terrain.
