Sturgeon Fishing on St. Clair River: A Thrilling Experience
Brett Baldwin and his wife Kathleen, hailing from Smethport, Pennsylvania, sought a fresh angling experience and chose the St. Clair River in Michigan as their destination. They rented a riverside home for several days with the specific goal of catching sturgeon. Initially, Brett admitted to limited knowledge regarding sturgeon fishing techniques, relying primarily on information he had gathered, which indicated the St. Clair River as an excellent location and earthworms as effective bait.
Their initial nocturnal fishing efforts yielded a few freshwater drum and catfish. However, the true excitement began after midnight when Brett hooked what he initially thought was a small fish, only for it to leap out of the water, revealing itself as a powerful sturgeon. After a ten-minute struggle, he managed to guide the fish to the dock. With his wife Kathleen's assistance, who found the sturgeon too large for the landing net, Brett bravely climbed into the water, embraced the impressive creature, and brought it onto the dock. They photographed and measured the sturgeon at 63 inches, estimating its weight at 65 pounds, before safely releasing it. Brett, having previously caught 40-pound muskies, noted the sturgeon's significantly greater weight. Their successful trip continued, with three more sturgeon caught, culminating in a memorable guided expedition with Anthony Moreschini of Finns Sportfishing Service, a renowned sturgeon specialist.
Moreschini, with 21 years of experience, expertly guided the Baldwins to four additional sturgeon, some ranging from 45 to 65 inches. A highlight was a double-header catch, where both Brett and Kathleen reeled in sturgeon simultaneously. Brett's largest catch during the guided trip, a 70-inch, 100-pound sturgeon, spectacularly jumped out of the water after being hooked at a depth of 30 feet in the river's strong currents, a sight Brett likened to 'Jaws'. Moreschini's expertise is evident in his impressive catch statistics, with 177 sturgeon caught by his clients this year and a goal of 350 before his season concludes in October. All fish are released unharmed, emphasizing conservation. Last year, his clients landed fish up to 80 inches, with the longest weighing an estimated 165 pounds. The Michigan sturgeon fishing season spans from mid-July to mid-March, with Moreschini preferring evening charters. Despite his initial inexperience, Brett's choice of the St. Clair River proved fortuitous, as even Moreschini confirmed their rented home was situated in a prime sturgeon habitat.
