Gardner Claims Fourth National Hill Climb Title Amidst Challenging Weather

In a display of sheer determination and athletic prowess, Illi Gardner, representing Cardiff Ajax CC, triumphantly clinched her fourth National Hill-Climb Championship on the demanding terrain of Porlock Toll Road in Somerset this past Sunday. Her victory, achieved with a time of 17 minutes and 33 seconds, underscored her dominance in the discipline, leaving second-placed Maria Holdcroft of Cowley Road Condors CC trailing by a notable 40 seconds.

The event was not without its moments of confusion, particularly in the women's third-place standings. Initially, Rebekah Hendrickse (EMC Cycling) was recognized, but a subsequent disqualification, reportedly due to an administrative oversight, led to Karolina Zydelyte (Dulwich Paragon CC) securing the final podium position. This adjustment, however, did not detract from Gardner's resounding success.

Gardner's triumph follows closely on the heels of her victory in the Everesting World Championships earlier in the month, an endurance event she successfully defended. Reflecting on the Hill-Climb, Gardner openly admitted to feeling a sense of panic on the day, attributing it to the severe weather conditions. Despite the mental challenge, her prior training in less-than-ideal weather proved instrumental. She emphasized the importance of pushing through discomfort during practice, acknowledging that cycling in cold, 10-degree weather in just a jersey and shorts is far from pleasant, yet crucial for developing resilience.

Her preparation for the National Hill-Climb Championships was somewhat unconventional. Gardner confessed that her focus had primarily been on the Everesting World Championships, a gruelling 14-hour event, which meant her hill climb-specific training was less extensive than she had initially planned. This unique training regimen, balancing extreme endurance with explosive power, ultimately played a role in her approach to the race.

Recounting her race strategy, Gardner shared that she deviated from her intended pacing. She had hoped to conserve energy for the upper sections of the climb, anticipating strong headwinds, but adrenaline took over. Starting with an aggressive burst, she found herself battling the wind fiercely towards the summit. Despite this tactical misstep, her inherent strength and conditioning, honed by diverse and challenging training experiences, carried her through to a well-deserved victory.

Illi Gardner's recent performance at the National Hill-Climb Championships is a testament to her exceptional skill and mental fortitude. Despite grappling with formidable weather conditions and an uncharacteristic start, her extensive preparation, including a recent win at the Everesting World Championships, allowed her to secure a convincing victory. This latest achievement further solidifies her standing as a prominent figure in the cycling world, capable of excelling across various challenging disciplines.
