Cannondale Production Shifts as Pon.Bike Restructures European Operations

Pon.Bike, a prominent entity in the cycling industry, has announced significant changes to its European manufacturing footprint, leading to the closure of its Cannondale bicycle production facility in Almelo, Netherlands. This strategic shift will result in the unfortunate redundancy of 120 employees. The company stated that the Almelo site no longer aligns with its broader multi-brand strategy, necessitating the relocation of Cannondale's manufacturing operations to facilities in Germany and Lithuania. This decision is part of a comprehensive restructuring effort designed to enhance efficiency and competitiveness within the dynamic global bicycle market, especially as the industry increasingly pivots towards electric bicycles.
The restructuring by Pon.Bike is rooted in an integrated multi-brand approach, which was initially launched in 2025. This strategy aims to centralize and optimize various business functions, including sales, marketing, procurement, production, and supply chain management, across Pon.Bike's diverse portfolio of brands. The company's goal is to enable its retail partners to fully leverage its extensive brand offerings, thereby securing a stronger position in the highly competitive international cycling sector. This move comes at a time when the bicycle market is transitioning from a phase of rapid expansion to one characterized by slower growth, with future demand anticipated to be heavily influenced by the e-bike segment.
Under the new operational model, Pon.Bike intends to consolidate its production activities into three primary European hubs. These include a Gazelle-centric factory located in Dieren, Netherlands; a versatile multi-brand facility in Emstek, Germany; and a scalable manufacturing plant in Kėdainiai, Lithuania. The Emstek facility, which already absorbed the European manufacturing of Santa Cruz and Cervélo bicycles following the closure of Pon's Mainz site in April 2025, is now slated to handle the assembly of Cannondale models. This redistribution of manufacturing capacity is designed to ensure that the combined output from these three locations can adequately meet the company's full production demands, including the supply of Cannondale bicycles to the European market, even amidst rising consumer expectations.
The Almelo site, initially acquired as part of Pon's 2021 acquisition of Dorel Sports, has historically focused exclusively on Cannondale production. However, its specialized nature rendered it incompatible with Pon.Bike's new integrated manufacturing framework. The closure of this facility will be implemented in phases over an estimated 18-month period, with a complete cessation of operations expected by the end of 2027. Pon.Bike has committed to gradually reallocating production to minimize disruptions and maintain a consistent supply of products to both dealers and consumers throughout this transitional phase.
In addition to these manufacturing changes, Cannondale is also reorganizing its operations in the United Kingdom. Following the conclusion of a 15-month partnership with Saddleback, Cannondale reverted to a direct-to-dealer sales model under Pon.Bike UK in March 2026. This adjustment follows earlier changes in 2023, when Pon dissolved its UK Cycling Sports Group division, leaving Cannondale without a UK distributor until Saddleback assumed the role in January 2025. Saddleback's subsequent entry into administration in May 2026 further expedited this strategic shift for Cannondale in the UK market.
